Translation? Cute eggs!
The thing about pregnancy is that you don’t know what cravings are going to hit you when or what they are going to be for, but when they strike, it’s hard to ignore it! And wouldya know that I just had to have hard boiled eggs???
Something about them was calling my name! While I was going to make a few boring hard boiled eggs, I decided to use my egg molds and make them cute and fun to eat. Of course, there was a bit more time and effort involved in transforming the once boring, oval-shaped eggs into something cute and fun, I had a dinner to eat while I waited for the eggs to ready themselves.
some cute molds!
Now that time was on my side, I got to work making my cute eggs! Most people like to get these for bento boxes, since there is a whole bento culture in the States, where many people are turning a simple lunch of sandwich and chips into something more fun and healthy and often, pieces of art! In Japan, I used to have my lunches made into bento all the time and its a trend that I begged my mom to stop once I started going to school in the States and my classmates would tease me for bringing sushi or cute bento boxes since everyone else got graham crackers, a boring bologna and cheese sandwich, chips or fruit snacks and a pint of milk. I insisted that I get to fit in, even though I didn’t like how sandwich bread always got stuck to the roof of my mouth and I would much rather have leftover dinner or bento for lunch than the crummy American lunch. But in elementary school, sometimes its all about fitting in!
How about a Hello Kitty bento?
or some cute birdies?
or a classic cartoon perhaps?
But now? It was all about making cute eggs to satisfy my preggers craving!
These are incredibly easy to make! First, hard boil your eggs as you normally would, let them cool until they can be handled comfortably, then open your molds and place the egg inside in the direction that would fill out the details best. Then close the mold and clasp it slowly, while easing the widest edges of the egg into the mold. Once all your eggs are secured in the molds, Bring a pot of water to a rolling boil and place the molds in the pot. Boil the eggs, in the molds, for 5-10 minutes, allowing the eggs to become very hot and change their shape to fit the molds. Drain the water, place the molds in a bowl or on a plate and place it in the fridge until they are cold to the touch – a couple of hours. Then carefully pop open the molds and ease the eggs out.
see how cute??
One of my molds, the car shape, really didn’t come out of the mold nicely, it broke in half and while I was able to get a whole half out – at least you can see how the inside of the egg changes and conforms to the shape of the mold. The other shapes turned out quite well and so darn cute!!! My husband rolled his eyes when I showed him what I had done to our eggs, but he smiled and helped me eat them. He is not a big fan of taking extra time out to cute-ify our food…. men! 🙂 But in the meantime, they were tasty, chic and entertaining!
